Looking back This week in our UFLI (phonics) lessons, we learned about the glued sounds /ng/ and /nk/.  We practiced reading and writing words with these sounds.  We also practiced the high frequency words (Heart words ) “ or ,” “ for ” which were a review from earlier on in the year.  Today your child has come home with a two decodable stories to read to you as well as a Roll and Read game and a small Home Practice page. Thank you for your continued support in practicing these concepts! We had a very exciting day on Wednesday…..the 100th day of school!! We celebrated by completing various 100 day activities throughout the day. We even got to visit some of the other grade 1 teachers! 100 day is always a memorable day in Grade 1.  In math we continued our work around ‘part, part, whole’ and did an open ended word problem where we could show our understanding using a picture and a number sentence (Theo had ___ cookies on a plate.

We also practiced the high frequency words (heart words) “ walk” and “talk”. Today your child has come home with 2 decodable passages to read to you as well as a new game called “Ups and Downs” to practice the /ch/ sound as well as the other digraphs. There is also a small Home Practice page coming home today. It gives examples of words your child has been practicing reading and writing at school and ideas for a short practice script. Please look carefully at the Irregular Words section as these are the heart words we have been practicing over the past several weeks. These would be great to review at home. Thank you for your continued support in practicing these concepts! We are almost finished our stories i

We were very excited to watch Balzac Billy come out of his burrow this morning. We had all made a prediction yesterday and created a graph to show whether we thought Billy would see his shadow or not. It turns out that many of us were correct as he did see his shadow, sadly predicting 6 more weeks of winter. We’ll see if he was right or not in the coming weeks! Looking Back This week in our UFLI lessons, we learned about the voiced and unvoiced sounds of /th/. We learned that voiced /th/ comes at the beginning of a word and unvoiced /th/ could be at the beginning or the end of a word (or even in the middle). We also practiced the high frequency words (heart words) “ their, ” “ they” and “ were. ” Today your child has come home with 2 decodable passages to read to you as well as a Roll and Read game to practice the sounds of both voiced and unvoiced /th/. Thank you for your continued support in practicing these concepts at home. We continued to work on writing our version of The Mitten
