Learning about Coding!

 Looking Back

This week in our UFLI (phonics) lessons, we learned about the digraph /ch/. We continued to review all other digraphs we have learned (/ck/, /sh/, /th/) and practiced reading and writing words with each of these digraphs during our review lessons later in the week. We also practiced the high frequency words (heart words) “walk” and “talk”. Today your child has come home with 2 decodable passages to read to you as well as a new game called “Ups and Downs” to practice the /ch/ sound as well as the other digraphs. There is also a small Home Practice page coming home today. It gives examples of words your child has been practicing reading and writing at school and ideas for a short practice script. Please look carefully at the Irregular Words section as these are the heart words we have been practicing over the past several weeks. These would be great to review at home. Thank you for your continued support in practicing these concepts!

We are almost finished our stories inspired by “The Mitten.” We are excited to read our stories to our friends and family. We also worked on a writing task this week where we were challenged to think of the story we could see in a picture and write it down. We used a checklist to help us remember capitals, punctuation, heart words and finger spaces. We were really excited to write our stories and challenged ourselves to put in lots of details.

In Math, we continued our work on addition, focusing on the “Friendly Tens.” Ask your child to tell you which numbers are the friendly ten numbers (numbers that always add up to 10). We learned a fun song to help us remember the addition sentences that equal 10. We also worked on our understanding of “part-part

In science we began to talk about coding by working with the ozobots! We learned that ozobots only do what we tell them to do and they move by reading the lines that we draw. We practiced calibrating our little robots and drawing a path for the ozobots to move. We are excited to explore more and will be incorporating them into our social studies coming up.

Looking ahead

In Math, we have been counting down to the 100th day of school!  Can you believe that the 100th day will be Wednesday February 22? We will be making a wall to show what 100 things looks like. Please look around your house and find something small you could send to school in a ziplock bag that represents 100 things. For example, you could send in 100 Cheerios, 100 chocolate chips, 100 lego pieces, 100 paperclips, etc.  Work together with your child to count out 100 of the item and send them in a bag labeled with their name. The items will be returned to you in a couple of weeks. Thank you for your help!

Valentine’s Day - Students are welcome to bring Valentines to distribute to the class on Wednesday, February 14th. If your child chooses to bring Valentines, please send one for every student (Mrs. Webber’s class has 24 students and Mrs. Janisse’s class has 24 students). Please only send Valentine's for your child's homeroom - either Mrs. Webber or Mrs. Janisse. Please only have your child write their name on the Valentine rather than putting the names of friends. This makes distribution much easier in the classroom. We ask that you please do not attach candy to the valentines as per CBE policy.

Valentine’s day is also red and pink day if your child chooses to wear something red and/or pink.

Just a reminder that there will be no school February 15 and 16 due to Teacher’s Convention and February 19 because of the Family Day holiday.

Please ensure all library books are returned Tuesday for book exchange.
