Happy Groundhog Day!

We were very excited to watch Balzac Billy come out of his burrow this morning. We had all made a prediction yesterday and created a graph to show whether we thought Billy would see his shadow or not. It turns out that many of us were correct as he did see his shadow, sadly predicting 6 more weeks of winter. We’ll see if he was right or not in the coming weeks!

Looking Back

This week in our UFLI lessons, we learned about the voiced and unvoiced sounds of /th/. We learned that voiced /th/ comes at the beginning of a word and unvoiced /th/ could be at the beginning or the end of a word (or even in the middle). We also practiced the high frequency words (heart words) “their,” “they” and “were.” Today your child has come home with 2 decodable passages to read to you as well as a Roll and Read game to practice the sounds of both voiced and unvoiced /th/. Thank you for your continued support in practicing these concepts at home.

We continued to work on writing our version of The Mitten and we hope to be finished these next week

In math we had a really fun song called “The Double Rap”. See if your child can remember all of the doubles to 10+10 and a trick to remember them! We talked about how learning our doubles will increase our math fluency and we will be able to add numbers in our head quicker. We practiced doubles by playing a game in tubs (doubles race to the top) as well as a partner game called “Doubles aren’t trouble”. On Friday we celebrated the 90th day of school with a visit from Zero the Hero. He brought as a game which helped us add numbers to make 10. Only 10 more days until Zero the Hero’s favourite day!

In Social Studies this week, we continued our learning about groups that we belong to. We have talked about how we belong in a family and this week, we talked about belonging at school. We talked about how we belong to a few different groups in our school. We belong to our class with our teacher, our bigger group with 2 classes joined together, the grade one group and the whole school. We went outside on a beautiful sunny day this week with our visual journals to sketch our wonderful school using our artist’s eyes.

Looking ahead

Valentine’s Day - Students are welcome to bring Valentines to distribute to the class on Wednesday, February 14th. If your child chooses to bring Valentines, please send one for every student (Mrs. Webber’s class has 24 students and Mrs. Janisse’s class has 24 students). Please only send Valentine's for your child's homeroom - either Mrs. Webber or Mrs. Janisse. Please only have your child write their name on the Valentine rather than putting the names of friends. This makes distribution much easier in the classroom. We ask that you please do not attach candy to the valentines as per CBE policy.

Red and Pink Day - Your child is welcome to wear red and/or pink on February 14 to help celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Just a reminder that there will be no school February 15 and 16 due to Teacher’s Convention and February 19 because of the Family Day holiday.

Please ensure all library books are returned Tuesday for book exchange.
