Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day! It has been a short and busy week here in Grade One!

Looking Back

This week in our UFLI (phonics) lessons, we learned about the digraphs /wh/ and /ph/. We practiced reading and writing words with each of these digraphs. We also practiced the high frequency words (Heart words ) “could,” “would,” “should.” These words are tricky and would be great ones to practice at home. Today your child has come home with a decodable story to read to you as well as a Roll and Read game and a small Home Practice page. Thank you for your continued support in practicing these concepts!

We read a story this week called “Map of My Heart.” We talked about what a map is and different ways it can be used. We worked very hard to create our own “Heart Maps.” We learned how to use a ruler to draw straight lines to create sections in our heart and used sharpie to draw and label all of the things that are most special to us. We finished them by using water colour paint to make each part of our heart beautiful.

In Math, we continued to work on our understanding of addition using a “part” “part” “whole” model. We have also been working on relating the addition sentence to its matching subtraction sentence. We also tried out adding together 3 numbers using ten frames to represent our answers.

We read many books about kindness and will continue to talk about kindness throughout the month of February.

Looking ahead

In Math, we have been counting down to the 100th day of school!  Can you believe that the 100th day will be Wednesday February 21? We will be making a wall to show what 100 things looks like. Please look around your house and find something small you could send to school in a ziplock bag that represents 100 things. For example, you could send in 100 Cheerios, 100 chocolate chips, 100 lego pieces, 100 paperclips, etc.  Work together with your child to count out 100 of the item and send them in a bag labeled with their name. The items will be returned to you in a couple of weeks. Thank you for your help!

We did not exchange library books this week. We will sign out a new book on Tuesday. Please ensure books are returned by then.

No School - Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16 due to Teacher’s Convention

No School - Monday, February 19 for the Family Day holiday
