Happy 100th Day of School!

We hope everyone enjoyed their Family Day long weekend!

Looking back

This week in our UFLI (phonics) lessons, we learned about the glued sounds /ng/ and /nk/.  We practiced reading and writing words with these sounds.  We also practiced the high frequency words (Heart words ) “or,” “for” which were a review from earlier on in the year.  Today your child has come home with a two decodable stories to read to you as well as a Roll and Read game and a small Home Practice page. Thank you for your continued support in practicing these concepts!

We had a very exciting day on Wednesday…..the 100th day of school!! We celebrated by completing various 100 day activities throughout the day. We even got to visit some of the other grade 1 teachers! 100 day is always a memorable day in Grade 1.

In math we continued our work around ‘part, part, whole’ and did an open ended word problem where we could show our understanding using a picture and a number sentence (Theo had ___ cookies on a plate. How many of each kind could he have?).

In social studies we looked at the next group that we belong to: Our Community! We talked about what a landmark is and some landmarks that we see around McKenzie Towne. We also watched a short video showing some famous landmarks all around the world. Next week if it warms up we will possibly be going on a community walk to check out some landmarks around our school.

We continue to check in on our hibernating bear cam and they are still asleep. Did you know they move around quite a bit and even walk around during hibernation? Today we looked at another live cam which we are very excited about. We will be keeping an eye on an eagle nest over the next while where two eagles have laid eggs and are incubating them. We have lots of questions about the eagles and are very excited to learn more about them.

Looking Forward
