Happy Long Weekend!

Looking back

This week in UFLI we continued our learning about r-controlled vowel sounds. We learned about ‘ir’ and ‘ur’ and how they both make the /er/ sound (and also ‘or’ if there is a ‘w’ in front of it). We also reviewed and practiced all the previous r controlled vowels we have learned. The roll and read game this week is a great way to practice all the r-controlled vowels.

We continued to work on our stories that have a problem and a solution. This week we wrote 2 ways our character tried to solve the problem but neither one worked. Next week we are hoping to finish them up!

In science we candled our eggs and had a good close look of what was happening inside. We even saw some movement in one of the eggs! We also started a polar bear research book to get ready for our learning at the zoo. We used a video and a book to learn about what polar bears look like. Did you know that a polar bear’s paw can be as big as a dinner plate!!

In math we did a word problem asking how many more squirrels than bunnies were in a given picture. The students had to answer the question and show their thinking by using a picture, bar model or subtraction sentence. We also began to talk about the concept of equality. We played a really fun game online where we had to balance the scales by figuring out what number a picture represented. We will continue our talk

Looking ahead

Next week, your child will bring home a small survey to do with you. It is connected to the learning we will be doing about the past in Social Studies. Please look out for this coming home in their backpack. We are hoping they can interview (only 2 questions) a grandparent, great uncle or aunt or other senior (friend, neighbour, etc.). If this is not possible, interviewing a parent would also work.

Our zoo trip is fast approaching! We will be heading there on Wednesday May 22 rain or shine! As of right now the weather doesn’t look fantastic so please have your child dress for the rain. We are asking to please not send an umbrella as they are a hassle to carry around all day. A hooded raincoat or poncho would be best. You know your kid best! If their rubber boots are hard to walk in all day please have your child wear runners and pack an extra pair of socks in case of wet feet. Please do not send money with your child that day. We will not be allowing them to purchase treats.

Book Fair!

The “buy one, get one free” book fair is next week. We will be viewing the books on Tuesday afternoon. Our day to purchase books at school is Thursday. If you wish to send money with your child for the bookfair, please send it on Thursday. Only books will be available for purchase at this time. If you wish to buy other items, these will be available in the evening during the Grade 3 and 4 Spring concerts.

Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday due to the Victoria Day holiday.
