Signs of Spring are all around us!

This week in UFLI we learned about the ending spelling patterns _es and _ed. We learned that when making words plural, _es is needed if the word ends in: /ch/, /sh/, s, x or z. We learned that a verb is an action or “doing” word. If we want to write about something that happened in the past, we add /ed/ to the word. There are three different sounds we could hear at the end of a verb when we are talking, and we learned that we record them all as ‘ed.’ (We could hear /t/ like in sipped, we could hear /d/ like in yelled or we could hear a ‘schwa’ sound and /d/ like in ended). Ask your child to tell you what the schwa sound means. We thought this was very interesting this week.

We enjoyed many more fun math lessons this week with our student teachers. We learned about composite shapes (making a bigger shape out of many smaller 2-D and 3-D shapes). We also began learning about symmetry.

Here is a link to a fun symmetry song we learned!

Monday was a very exciting day with the solar eclipse occurring. We watched a live feed of areas that had totality. It was amazing to see how dark it got and what the sun looked like completely covered. We then did a simple art project to commemorate the eclipse. We traced a bowl with some chalk pastel and then used our finger to spread it out. When we were finished it looked just like a real eclipse!

We began a new Science unit this week about Energy. Our main learning is about moving objects and animals. Our question is:  “How can we understand movement of objects and animals?” We learned that there are three main things that make up movement (direction, speed and pathway). We practiced moving in several different ways and learned about how to draw lines using different pathways. We created an art piece that began with the lines we drew in Science. We then read a story called “Matthew’s Dream.” We spent today turning our line drawings into beautiful art through painting. Next week, we will be using our art to create writing pieces.

On Thursday we took our learning outside and went for a “Signs of Spring” community walk. Our student teachers made us a scavenger hunt of things to look and listen for to tell us that spring is on its way. We walked to Inukshuk park and then found a sit spot to listen, look and reflect on the changes happening around us.

Looking ahead

There will be no school Friday April 19 as it is a PD day.

Please return library books on Tuesday to exchange for a new one.
