Learning about Our Community with Ozo!

 Looking Back

This week in our UFLI (phonics) lessons, we learned about the spelling patterns i_e and o_e  (we call it the “bossy e”). We learned that just as in a_e (from last week), these patterns spell the long sound of the vowel (i and o). We practiced the high frequency words (heart words) “by, my” and reviewed many of the heart words we have learned over the past few weeks. Today your child has come home with two decodable stories to read to you as well as a Roll and read game and a small Home Practice page. These home practice materials are now in an ORANGE folder! Please read the information at the front of the folder! Please return the folder EVERY THURSDAY in order for new materials to be added each Friday. This will make it easier for you to revisit favourite decodable passages as well as review and practice skills when needed. Below is a link to a more detailed description of how to use the home practice page (half sheet) in the home practice folder.

We read a poem called "March" and talked about how the weather can sometimes change drastically during this month. This week's weather was a great example of "In like a lion, out like a lamb."

In math we continued practicing adding strategies and applied these strategies to a real life word problem. We pretended we were going to a pet store and had $10 to spend and the kids had to show all the different things they could buy with their $10.

In social studies we looked at an actual map with McKenzie Towne and figured out where the landmarks are that we see each day. We created our own community maps, putting on our house on and other familiar landmarks. We added a track for ozo with some fun codes for the ozobots to follow. We hope ozo will be able to travel from our house to the school. We are excited to try them out next week!

Looking ahead

Please return UFLI folders on Thursday. For the next little bit this will be our home reading. Choose an activity or reading to do each night this week!

Leprechaun traps - We are going to be building leprechaun traps this week in class! Please bring in a box (or 2) to build the main part of the trap on Monday. We talked about some other things we might need to build our traps (gold, rainbow things, green things, etc…) for your child to bring in if they choose. Hopefully they are excited to tell you all about what their plan is and you can decide together what they want to bring in.
