Celebrating kindness and belonging on pink shirt day!

Looking Back

This week in our UFLI (phonics) lessons, we reviewed and practiced all of the consonant digraphs. We also learned about the spelling pattern a_e (we call it the “bossy e”) and that it spells the long /a/ sound. We practiced the high frequency word (heart word) “who” and reviewed many of the heart words we have learned over the past few weeks. Today your child has come home with two decodable stories to read to you as well as a Roll and Read game and a small Home Practice page.

We did some fun writing challenges this week. We wrote about a memory we have of a time we felt really excited and we also wrote about how to make a sandwich. We are learning about how to add details to our writing and how to start our sentences in different ways.

On pink shirt day, we read a story called “The Invisible Boy.” We talked about how all of us can feel a little invisible sometimes and about the importance of making our classrooms a welcoming place where everyone feels like they belong. We created a visual journal page about ways we can make others feel welcome in our classroom and school.

In Math this week, we continued our work using the bar model to represent part/part/whole equations. We practiced using the model to solve both addition and subtraction word problems. We are working on our understanding of the relationship between addition and subtraction. We noticed that our understanding of addition using the bar model is really coming along and we continue to work on using a bar model to solve subtraction problems as it is a bit tricky.

In Social Studies, we continued our learning about landmarks and maps and we learned a catchy song about making a map. The students all agreed that we should put a link to the song in the blog so they can share it with you at home. Here it is:

We were excited to have the Ozobots back in our classroom this week. We practiced teaching them to follow our directions through drawing a path with special codes. Ask your child to tell you which codes they tried and whether Ozo was able to follow their directions. Next week, we will be creating a map for Ozo to take a tour around some of the landmarks in our community.

We have been very excited to keep an eye on our eagle cam this week as the 3 eggs in the nest are coming close to the time that they might hatch. We have been looking for a “pip” (hole) in the eggs whenever we can get a peek at them and we are learning many things about how eagles take care of their eggs in their nest (ask your child what a “brooding pouch” is). If you would like to take a peek at the eagle cam over the weekend, here is a link:
