Happy Winter Solstice!

It was a busy and festive week here in Grade One! We had so much fun enjoying many different activities including caroling and our traditional school-wide snack and story with Dr. Slater. We had a holiday visit from Zero the Hero for the 70th day of school and enjoyed some time with our Grade 3 buddies.


On Thursday, we celebrated the Winter Solstice and welcomed the season of winter by going outside to watch the sunrise. We learned that it is the shortest day and the longest night of the year. We read a story called “Mouse Celebrates the Winter Solstice” and discussed the Indigenous tradition of celebrating the Winter Solstice. 




Thank you to the Parent Council for the wonderful lunch provided to teachers on Friday. It was delicious and very much appreciated and enjoyed!


We hope you have a wonderful winter break with family and friends and we are looking forward to seeing you in 2024!

The eggs are here!

This week in UFLI we learned about the r-controlled vowel sounds /ar/ and /or/. We learned that when the /r/ sound is after a vowel, it can change the way the vowel sounds. We learned that the r-controlled vowel sounds /ar/ and /or/ can show up in different places in the word (beginning, middle, end). We practiced reading and writing words such as part, park, start, corn, sort, storm.  We learned a fun rhyming poem called “Eggs” this week. We have BIG news to tell you about the incubator that is now in our classrooms! Ask your child to tell you what kind of eggs are in the incubator (duck), how many there are (8), and how many days they will be in the incubator before they begin hatching (about 28). Celebrating kindness and belonging on pink shirt day!

Looking Back This week in our UFLI (phonics) lessons, we reviewed and practiced all of the consonant digraphs. We also learned about the spelling pattern a_e (we call it the “bossy e”) and that it spells the long /a/ sound. We practiced the high frequency word (heart word) “ who ” and reviewed many of the heart words we have learned over the past few weeks. Today your child has come home with two decodable stories to read to you as well as a Roll and Read game and a small Home Practice page.   We did some fun writing challenges this week. We wrote about a memory we have of a time we felt really excited and we also wrote about how to make a sandwich. We are learning about how to add details to our writing and how to start our sentences in different ways.  On pink shirt day, we read a story called “The Invisible Boy.” We talked about how all of us can feel a little invisible sometimes and about the importance of making our classrooms a welcoming place where everyone feels like they belon

Time to do Research!

  Looking Back This week in UFLI we continued to talk about vowel teams. We learned that the long i sound can be spelled using 2 different vowel teams, ‘igh,’ ‘ie.’ We learned that igh is usually in the middle or at the end of a word and that ‘ie’ comes at the end of words. We did lots of practice in order to become more familiar with spelling words with this rule. There is only 1 reading passage in our UFLI folder this week in order to practice this skill. In science we started our animal research! We used the computer to go onto pebblego and look up our animal as well as using our non-fiction books to fill in our research page. We also went onto arthub to do a nice guided drawing of our animal. We will be finishing these up next week.  We also finished up our plant work by painting our root vegetables art.
