Happy Winter Solstice!

Image
Friday, December 22, 2023 It was a busy and festive week here in Grade One! We had so much fun enjoying many different activities including caroling and our traditional school-wide snack and story with Dr. Slater. We had a holiday visit from Zero the Hero for the 70th day of school and enjoyed some time with our Grade 3 buddies. On Thursday, we celebrated the Winter Solstice and welcomed the season of winter by going outside to watch the sunrise. We learned that it is the shortest day and the longest night of the year. We read a story called “Mouse Celebrates the Winter Solstice” and discussed the Indigenous tradition of celebrating the Winter Solstice.  Thank you to the Parent Council for the wonderful lunch provided to teachers on Friday. It was delicious and very much appreciated and enjoyed! We hope you have a wonderful winter break with family and friends and we are looking forward to seeing you in 2024! Dates to Remember: December 25 - January 5 - NO SCHOOL Winter Break January 8

We sang our hearts out!

Friday, December 15, 2023 Thank you to all who were able to attend our Holiday Assembly. The students were so excited to share their songs and poems with you and it was wonderful to see your smiling faces supporting them in the audience! Looking Back This week we focused on the sounds /qu/ and /ck/. Our words this week were do, back, where, always, very, come . Thank you for continuing to practice at home using the small paper that comes home at the beginning of the week. Please also continue to send your child’s ziplock bag into school everyday so that they may choose a new book to read at home and have their bag for important notices being sent home. Thank you! This was a very exciting and busy week in Grade One. We continued to share our family traditions with the class and have been building our skills in asking a question after hearing about a friend’s tradition. Thank you to all who have sent in a tradition for your child to share. If you have not yet done so, there is still t

Friday, December 7, 2023 Sorry I forgot to hit "publish"..... Looking Back This week we focused on the digraphs /wh/ and /th/ . Our words this week were when, what, which, her, are, they. Thank you for continuing to practice at home using the small paper that comes home at the beginning of the week. Please also continue to send your child’s ziplock bag in to school everyday so that they may choose a new book to read at home and have their bag for important notices being sent home. Thank you! In math, we learned about 2-D shapes and played a fun guessing game where students had to figure out the shape they could feel by describing the attributes or properties of the shape. We had a visit from Zero the Hero on the 60th day of school (Wednesday) and he brought us a game with a focus on identifying 2-D shapes in the real world.  In Science, we continued our work on matter and learned about changing properties this week. We practiced different ways to change our playdough by st

Welcome December!

Friday, December 1, 2023 It was a busy final week of November! This week we focused on the digraphs /ch/ and /sh/. Our words this week were then, all, little, like, much, push . As our words and sounds are getting more complex, continued practice at home is extremely beneficial. Please also continue to send your child’s ziplock bag in to school everyday so that they may choose a new book to read at home and have their bag for important notices being sent home. Thank you! In math we started a really fun project called “Guess my number!”. We hid a number under a sticky note and tried to show as many different ways as we could to represent that number. We then had our classmates and our buddies try and guess our number.  Ms. Gunson did a special math activity with Mrs. Webber’s class called “Math About Me.” Ms. Jardie did a writing activity with Mrs. Janisse’s class that introduced family traditions. We used the same style the indigenous people did and wrote our traditions on ‘buffalo
