We are scientists!

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family. It was a short but busy week here in Grade 1!

Looking Back

This week, our weekly words were: on, went. The sounds we practiced were v, w, y, z.  We are very excited that we have finished reviewing all of the letters! Thank you for your support in reviewing them at home! Thank you for reviewing and practicing these with your child at home using the paper book they brought home from school today. We wrote some silly sentences that started with “I went on the________”.

Our song this week was all about teen numbers. Here is the link in case you want to check it out!

In math we talked about counting to make sure we are being accurate. See if your child can remember some of the counting rules we talked about. We practiced counting by playing a fun guessing game with a partner and did some forwards and backwards counting not starting at 1.

This week we started to learn about the second grandfather teaching about respect. We learned that the buffalo represents respect as it is a very important animal in Indigenous cultures.

In science we started talking about some fancy words called “The Scientific Method”. We learned about what it means to wonder about something, taking a guess (hypothesis) and doing an experiment to try and figure out the answer. This week we asked the question “Why do leaves change in the fall?” We did an experiment to try to find the answer to our question. We each made a hypothesis about what we thought would happen in the experiment and recorded it using pictures and words. When we arrived at school this morning, something had changed in our experiment and we talked about our observations (what we noticed). Ask your child to tell you about the experiment using the picture below.

We have been observing a pair of bears over the last few weeks who are getting ready for hibernation. If you are interested in checking in on the bears at home, here is a link to their habitat.
