Monster Writing!

October 27, 2023

We had a very exciting time going on our first field trip of the year this week. Despite the snowy weather, we were able to enjoy the performance of “Honk!” The Musical at Storybook Theatre.

Looking Back

This week, we focused on word families with the superstar vowel short /a/. The word families we practiced ended with the letter combinations __ad, __ap, __an, __at, __am. The words we focused on this week were: said, has, as, his and ask. The poem we read this week was “Five Little Pumpkins.” We had a fantastic time reading it in many different ways. We noticed that the word “said” was in the poem many times! Ask your child to say the poem for you and do the actions. There’s a special singing part at the end! It goes like this:

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.

The first one said: “Oh my it’s getting late.”

The second one said: “There’s a frost in the air.”

The third one said: “But we don’t care.”

The fourth one said: “Let’s run and run and run.”

The fifth one said: “I’m ready for some fun!”

Then, Oooh went the wind and out went the lights.

And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight!

We worked on a fun project that combined writing, art and science this week. We each used playdough, pipe cleaners and googly eyes to create our own monster. We used our artists’ eyes to carefully draw our monster with sharpie and colour it with pastels. We thought of a name for our monster and wrote a sentence to introduce them. We then discussed the properties of our monster and wrote as many sentences as we could to tell about them.

In Math, we continued our work on representing numbers. This week, we focused on representing numbers with ten frames. Now that we are mostly comfortable representing numbers to 10 using ten frames, we moved on to representing teen numbers using ten frames. We practiced using games and also in our math books. We ended the week by becoming math detectives, looking around the room for secret ten frames and showing the number in our math book.

We are working on an exciting art project using pastel, sharpie and paint. We can’t wait for you to see it soon. Stay tuned!

Looking Forward

We signed out a library book today (Friday) as we missed library on Tuesday when we were on our field trip. Please return the book by Tuesday.

Winter clothing help! Now that the snow and ice are here and the temperature has dropped, we have many more clothes to put on at recess and after school to keep us warm. It is extremely helpful if students are able to put their winter clothes on independently. Please practice having your child do their own zipper, put on their own snow pants, and put on their boots and mitts independently. Thank you for your help!
