October 27, 2023 We had a very exciting time going on our first field trip of the year this week. Despite the snowy weather, we were able to enjoy the performance of “Honk!” The M usical at Storybook Theatre.  Looking Back This week, we focused on word families with the superstar vowel short /a/. The word families we practiced ended with the letter combinations __ad, __ap, __an, __at, __am . The words we focused on this week were: said, has, as, his and ask. The poem we read this week was “Five Little Pumpkins.” We had a fantastic time reading it in many different ways. We noticed that the word “said” was in the poem many times! Ask your child to say the poem for you and do the actions. There’s a special singing part at the end! It goes like this: Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate. The first one said: “Oh my it’s getting late.” The second one said: “There’s a frost in the air.” The third one said: “But we don’t care.” The fourth one said: “Let’s run and run and run.” The fifth on

Ask me why I brought a toy to school!

October 20, 2023 Looking Back This week, we focused on several words with 2 sounds each. The words were: it, if, us, at, up, am, in . The sounds we reviewed were the short vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u . We are becoming experts in knowing the difference between a consonant and a vowel. Ask your child to tell you the sound of each short vowel and to show you the signal that goes with it. We got out the guitar this week to share in singing a song about short vowels.  We were very excited to begin a new topic in Science about Matter. We began by looking at a colourful picture of a collection of toys and asking how we would describe these toys with words. We noticed that each of the toys was unique and learned a fancy word: properties . We came up with many different properties (e.g. soft, hard, tall, short, heavy, light, smooth, squishy, blue, red, etc.) to describe the toys. The next day, we were very excited to bring in our own toy from home to use in our Science/Literacy learning. We

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family. It was a short but busy week here in Grade 1! Looking Back This week, our weekly words were: on, went . The sounds we practiced were v, w, y, z .  We are very excited that we have finished reviewing all of the letters! Thank you for your support in reviewing them at home! Thank you for reviewing and practicing these with your child at home using the paper book they brought home from school today. We wrote some silly sentences that started with “I went on the________”.  Our song this week was all about teen numbers. Here is the link in case you want to check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W5aYi3lkho#:~:text=in%20the%20teens.-,they%20start%20with%20a%20one%20come%20on%20everybody%20let's%20get,one%20and%20a%20five%20sixteen . In math we talked about counting to make sure we are being accurate. See if your child can remember some of the counting rules we talked about. We practiced counting by playing a fun gue

October 6, 2023 Apologies for the Saturday morning blog this week! I forgot to press the button that makes it possible for all of you to see it on Friday! Thank you everyone who was able to attend our 3 Left Feet performance. We had a fantastic time learning and dancing during our Dance Residency over the past 2 weeks! Thank you again to Parent Council for providing this learning opportunity. Looking Back This week, our weekly words were: can, you . The sounds we practiced were u, k, s, x, p . Thank you for reviewing and practicing these with your child at home using the paper book they brought home from school today.  During our printing practice this week, we wrote sentences that started with “Can you see the_____?” We learned the difference between an asking sentence and a telling sentence and practiced printing a question mark at the end of our asking sentences. Our poem this week was “The Turkey is a Funny Bird.” We enjoyed practicing it by taking turns and using different voice
