Writing our own stories!

Friday, Jan 26, 2024 Looking back This week in our UFLI lesson we reviewed the digraphs /ck/ and /sh/. Once again we have brought home some decodable passages and a roll and read game to practice! We also practiced the high frequency words goes and says . Thanks for your continued support in practicing these concepts at home.  After all the activities we did with “The Mitten” story we are looking forward to writing our own version of the story. This week, we created a story plan using drawings and labels. We chose 3 animals for our story,  an item that the animals will crawl into and thought about how our story would end. We started the first page of our books and are looking forward to continuing on with them next week.  In math we continued our introduction to addition by using 10 frames to practice.  In science we revisitd the story "Over and Under the Snow". We drew a winter scene in our visual journals showing all the places animals might go for the winter. We then so

We can retell a story!

Friday, January 19, 2024 Looking Back This week in our UFLI (phonics) lessons, we learned two new concepts. We learned about the “floss” rule (flsz) for when we hear the /f/, /l/, /s/, or /z/ sound at the end of a word. If we hear those sounds after a short vowel sound, we double the consonant ( /ff/, /ll/, /ss/, /zz/ ). We also learned that when the vowels  /a/, /o/ and /u/ are followed by /ll/, they make a different sound (e.g. ball, roll, full). We practiced reading and writing words that follow this rule and read and illustrated decodable text with many “flsz” words in it. Today we brought this decodable story home to read to you as well as a game to practice the new spelling rules to play with you at home.  We read a wonderful story this week called “The Mitten” by Jan Brett. We learned about retelling a story and practiced retelling the story the next day as a whole group using all of the animal characters. We continued our learning about retelling a story by creating our own “

Happy New Year!

Friday, January 12, 2024 Happy New Year!  What a way to start the new year with a week of freezing cold weather!  Looking Back We started off 2024 by leveling up to a new kind of phonics learning called UFLI. Our literacy time consists of many routines which we are already experts at so moving into our new UFLI phonics learning has been an easy transition and very fun! During UFLI time, students learn and practice new phonics skills daily as well as continuing to learn high-frequency irregular words (heart words). We practice reading and writing decodable text and work hard to build our skills. This week, we reviewed the short vowel sounds daily and practiced reading words with a consonant cluster (or blend - e.g. pl, gr, st) at the beginning or end of the word. Today you will see 2 decodable passages in your child’s ziplock bag as well as a game to practice reading decodable words. They have practiced reading these passages at school this week and illustrated them to show their unde
